Hampden Estate
Hampden Estate — Jamaica's High-Ester Rum Powerhouse
Hampden Estate, founded in 1753 in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, is one of the oldest continuously operating rum distilleries in the Caribbean. While the sugarcane estates surrounding it have come and gone, Hampden has endured — and for good reason. The distillery is the undisputed home of the extreme high-ester Jamaican rum style, producing marks with ester counts that would be considered faults anywhere else, but here are the entire point.
The distillery uses open wooden fermentation vats, wild yeasts, and traditional pot stills to coax extraordinary complexity from Caribbean molasses — ripe tropical fruits, leather, overripe banana, and a funky depth that is immediately recognisable. Under Austrian ownership since 2018, Hampden has been opened to international audiences who had previously only encountered it as an ingredient in blends. The Pagos series offers an accessible entry point to the full Hampden character.
